Tuscany Road Cycling Holiday - Self guided Tour. This is an athletically challenging tour combined with overnight stays in historical cities such as Volterra, San Gimignano and Siena. The fine wines and delectable Tuscan cooking will make your Tuscan bike tour unforgettable!

You'll experience a variety of Tuscany's wonderful landscapes, from cycling in the hilly Volterra area down to the Mediterranean Sea. The route enters the Chianti region, where the "Chianti Classico" comes from, and on to wonderful Crete, in the south of Siena. Tuscany's hilly landscape is the perfect place to begin or end a cycling route. The temperatures are ideal to bike year round. Many professional cycling teams (i.e. T-Mobile Team) are already here in February to prepare for the competitive cycling season.

This round-trip tour offers a choice between two routes from about 70km (43.75 miles) up to about 115km (71.87 miles) every day. To allow you to explore various cities, (and not have to pack up every day!) you'll enjoy two nights stay in each hotel. With your detailed route description and excellent signage on the route, you'll find this is an easy to navigate bike tour.

Tour details: Cyclists with average and above average fitness levels can navigate this tour. Tuscany has a typical hilly landscape and therefore, apart from some longer climbs and more flat areas, the route is up and down on rolling hills. The routes are on mostly good asphalt roads, far from major roads. At times you may encounter heavier traffic when entering or leaving a city.

Day 1: Arrive at Montecatini Terme
You'll get your information package at the hotel reception. Montecatini Terme is one of the most important spring towns in Italy. Well known people such as Giacomo Puccini and Giuseppe Verdi, spent their time in this town to enjoy the healing properties of the famous spring water. In Montecatini it is possible to visit the gorgeous "Terme Tettuccio" or to take one of the oldest funiculars in Italy, the "Funicolare". Take time to visit the historic part of the town known as Montecatini Alto. This area gives you a wonderful view of the "Val di Nievole" valley and the Apennines Mountains. Drink a glass of local wine or enjoy some delicious Gelato in the charming, medieval square before heading to your hotel.

Day 2: Montecatini Terme - roundtrip tour
(70 km/600 hm or 80 km/ 800 hm)
From the spring town Montecatini Terme, in the north of Tuscany, you'll cycle to medieval city of Montecarlo, surrounded by vivid vineyards. From there, bike the flat lands of the Padule di Fucecchio nature reserve. Continue through the gentle hills in the Montecarlo area, filled with vineyards and olive groves. If you choose the longer tour, head to Massa and to the beginning of the Apennin mountains.

Day 3: Montecatini Terme - Volterra
(90 km/1.300 hm or 110 km/1.600 hm)
This part of the route leads you through nature reserves and wooded countryside, passing the "Arnovalley" an area with ragged peaks and giant trees. Pedal past medieval towns as you cycle south to reach your destination of Volterra. Volterra, also known as the city of alabaster, is famous for its intricate alabaster carvings. The city is situated on the back of a mountain right in the middle of the Tuscan landscape. Thanks to its impressive position, (and if the weather cooperates!) you'll enjoy a wonderful view from the Apuan Alps to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Day: Volterra - Marina di Cecina (Mediterranean Sea) - Volterra
(90 km/1.400 hm or 105 km/1.400 hm)
Be sure to enjoy the stunning view as you begin today's ride. You'll bike from Volterra through the Cecina Valley to the Etruscan Coast. The beach and the blue Mediterranean Sea in Marina di Cecina will reward you for the effort you put into first part of this tour! Relax in your Volterra hotel this evening.

Day 5: Volterra - Siena
(80 km/1.200 hm or 95 km/1.500 hm)
Today's route begins with a ride to "the Gender Towers " of San Gimignano. The so called "Manhattan of Tuscany" is a small medieval town, filled with charm that invites you to stay for a while. On the second part of the route, you'll cycle through the vineyards "Colli Senesi", passing by Monteriggioni Castle to your evening's hotel stay in Siena. Siena is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a wonderfully preserved medieval aspect. In the middle of the city, explore one of the greatest Italian medieval squares, the "Piazza del Campo". Its wide open space opens out, like a theatre. You might be lucky and arrive during the famous horserace "Palio", which takes place in this square twice a year.

Day 6: Siena - Asciano - Siena
(90 km/ 1.400 hm or 110 km/1.700 hm)
Begin biking to the south of Siena, and discover the bizarre landscape of the Crete. Enjoy the view as you ride on less-trafficked, paved roads through Asciano to the wooded country "Montagnola". On the last miles you can look ahead to see your destination Siena, the city of "Palio".

Day 7: Siena - Montecatini Terme
(110 km/1.200 hm or 120 km/1.450 hm)
Today's route is ideal for wine lovers! You'll pass through the wine region of "Chianti Classico" which is filled with vine covered hills, deep forests and cypress and olive groves. In the afternoon, stop in the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci and then head to the wine region of Montalbano .Your tour ends at your hotel in Montecatini Terme.
