From Bamberg to Aschaffenburg

In large bends river Main flows through varied country Franken. It seeks its way through marvellous Franken wine-growing area and meanders through Würzburg and once much feared dark forest of Spessart. The scenery along river Main belongs to the wealthiest and most varied parts of Bavaria and Hessen. A long and ever-changing history left many castles, fortresses, monasteries, churches and chapels. Many famous and unique cities assemble along the river: old Imperial residence Bamberg, old residence Würzburg, half-timbered Miltenberg or boisterous Ochsenfurt to name only a few of many. 1st day: Arrival in Bamberg
Individual arrival in Bamberg. Handing out of rental bicycles in late afternoon at bicycle-depot; depending on booked category about 7 min walk from the start hotel. Start the trip with a walk through the city of Emperor Heinrich II, who dreamed of Bamberg, realised and loved it and who was interred in the dome.
In the afternoon guided Tour - "Fascination World Cultural Heritage" in the old town of Bamberg (half past 4 p.m. - half past 6 p.m. - from 4 members)
2nd day: Bamberg -Schweinfurt surroundings (approx. 50 / 60 km)
You start the tour along the Main Path to the Rokoko-pilgrimage church Maria Limbach - a late work of Balthasar Neumann. In the medieval half-timbered city Zeil am Main you should take your lunch in a typically brewery inn.
On foot of Hassberge Mountains you reach Hassfurt and here you walk in the footsteps of Tilmann Riemenschneider. Admire a unique building of occidental art: Hassfurt's knave's chapel. You can go on a short trip on the former railway track to the nice, small, half-timbered town of Königsberg in Bavaria (birthplace of mathematician and astronomer Regiomontanus; arts and crafts place in the former brewery - about 15 km to and fro).
Along river Main you cycle to Schweinfurt. You will soon discover that Schweinfurt is more than just an industrial city. In the free imperial town of Schweinfurt you should see one of the most beautiful Renaissance town halls and the "Museum Georg Schäfer" (important private collection of German painting of the 19th century).
3rd day: Schweinfurt surroundings - Dettelbach (approx. 60 / 50 km)
Today you cycle through idyllic villages and vast vineyards.
Shortly before Volkach you should not miss a visit of the most famous wood-cutting of Tilman Riemenschneider: Madonna with Rosary in pilgrim's church St. Maria im Weingarten. Around wine-grower town Volkach am Main the best wines grow. At the Nordheim vinothek "Divino" you will get tastes of "Frankenwein", which you should not miss. At Dettelbach there are a unique late Gothic town hall, 30 round towers and two gates of the medieval town fortification.
4th day: Dettelbach - Würzburg (approx. 50 km)
The Franken wine-growing area presents itself like in former times: there are framework wine-grower towns with medieval charisma between vineyards. Today you will see the "Heiligkreuzkapelle" by Balthasar Neumann, the picturesque wine village Sulzdorf and Marktbreit with two baroque trade houses which stand opposite and are worth seeing. Roll on via Ochsenfurt and see beautiful sights, the artist village Sommerhausen, Randersacker and get to Würzburg with its dominating fortress. Superb monuments are the residence (UNESCO heritage), St. Kilians-dome, Neumünster, historic ensemble of Marien chapel and Falken house on the market, the old Main bridge and the traditional wine estates in midst of the old town.
5th day: Würzburg - Karlstadt (approx. 30 km)
Guided tour through the prince bishop`s residence in Würzburg (approx. 45 min.) Beside baroque magnificence Würzburg is famous for its wines which you can taste e.g.at the "Juliusspital", one of the largest vineyards of Germany. Afterwards you cycle on the Main Bike Path via Veitshöchheim with one of the best kept rococo gardens of Europe to the destination of the day, Karlstadt, which was founded in the times of the Staufer dynasty (about 1200).
6th day: Karlstadt - Wertheim (approx. 70 km)
Bicycle tour through the natural park Bayerischer Spessart, Gemünden am Main (ruin Scherenburg), Steinbach (parish church St. Joseph rich of baroque interior and castle), Lohr am Main (castle with Spessart museum), Homburg (framework castle), Wertheim, a town that was able to preserve the character of an old frank-town.
7th day: Wertheim - Aschaffenburg (approx. 75 km)
You cycle between the natural parks Bayerischer Spessart and Bergstraße-Odenwald via Freudenberg to Bürgstadt with Martin`s chapel (10th century), there are frescos of a "poor people`s bible" in 40 medaillons, in half timbered Miltenberg you can see the inn "Riesen" (which is the oldest hostel of Germany's sovereigns) and the old market place with "Schnatterloch" (one of the most idyllic places of Germany and a famous photo place) and Mildenburg. Roll on to the "red wine town" Klingenberg and to the end destination Aschaffenburg, the "Bavarian Nice" of King Ludwig I. of Bavaria.
8th day: Individual departure or extra days
If you have some time left in Aschaffenburg, you should see Castle Johannisburg and its furnishings.
