The Vienna Alps consist of three mountain ranges, all accessible by train from Vienna in about 1.5 hours.
The Semmering region, a popular retreat since the imperial era, offers relatively easy hiking trails. One highlight is the scenic hike along the historic Semmering Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
For a more rugged experience, the Rax Plateau rises to nearly 2,000 meters. A cable car takes you to the top, where several circular hiking routes provide stunning alpine views.
The Schneeberg, the highest peak in Lower Austria, offers a unique experience with a historic cog railway leading up to the summit. Here, you can enjoy true high-altitude hiking while still being close to Vienna.
This adventure pairs perfectly with a city break in Vienna, as we also offer a 5-day tour combining both experiences. Discover more on our tour page!
